A rating of 5.0 across 7,766 reviews is an unusual number for a balloon company anywhere, and Royal Balloon holds the largest review count of any flight listed on this site. That kind of volume accumulates over years of daily departures rather than from any single feature of the ticket. The flight lasts an hour above the volcanic rock spires and high plateaus that shape this part of Turkey. Hotel transport is included both ways, by air-conditioned minivan, with a light breakfast at the balloon office before you reach the launch field: fruit, a sandwich, hot and cold drinks. You watch the envelope, some 30 metres (100 feet) of it, fill and stand up before boarding. In the air the pilot talks through the geology and history underneath while the balloon climbs to roughly 300 metres (1,000 feet), close enough to pick out churches and houses cut into the rock. A Royal Medal is handed over after landing. Two baskets run: the Royal Queen takes a maximum of 24 passengers, the Royal King a maximum of 12. Departures are at dawn, the only window Turkish civil aviation permits in Cappadocia, and mornings are lost to wind often enough between December and April to be worth planning around. Read the booking terms before you commit: all sales are final and cancellations are not refunded.

  1. Cappadocia

Pickup is from your hotel by air-conditioned minivan, with the Turkish countryside going past on the way to the balloon office. Breakfast there is light: fruit, a sandwich, hot and cold drinks. The launch field is close by, and you watch a 30-metre (100-foot) balloon inflate before stepping into the basket with your pilot. Once airborne the balloon tracks through the Cappadocia valleys, near enough to the rock formations to make out churches and houses carved into them, while the pilot talks through the region's geology and history and the balloon climbs to about 300 metres (1,000 feet). A Royal Medal is presented after the flight. The Royal Queen basket holds a maximum of 24 people and the Royal King a maximum of 12.
