Hot Air Balloon Rides in Turkey

The volcanic tuff around Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp erodes into cones, ridges and hollow valleys that make sense from the air in a way they never quite do from the road. Commercial flights are at dawn, and Turkey's civil aviation authority caps how many balloons may be in the air at the same time: 100, divided across three sectors of airspace. On a clear morning that produces the densest balloon traffic on the planet, which for most visitors is the whole point. Pamukkale, near Denizli in the southwest, is the country's other balloon site. Operators fly at sunrise over the white travertine terraces and the ruins of Hierapolis above them, under the same daily departure limits that apply elsewhere in Turkey. It is a smaller scene with fewer companies and lower prices, and it makes sense as an addition to a trip through the Aegean interior rather than a reason to reroute one. Beyond those two places, Turkey has no established commercial balloon programme.
