Hot Air Balloon Rides near Barcelona

The flights leave from inland Catalonia — the Vic plain, the Empordà — and not from the coast, which is what widens the season. Away from the sea breeze the shoulder months hold: March and November are flying months here when they are marginal further north.

Summer does not close the season, it moves it. July and August mornings are launchable but short, and the inland fog that makes the Vic plain photogenic in autumn is the same fog that occasionally scrubs a winter morning.

The standard flight, at around 195 EUR, lifts off into the Conca d'Odena, a shallow basin ringed by low hills. Montserrat is the landmark you cannot miss from it: a wall of pink conglomerate broken into hundreds of rounded fingers, with the Benedictine abbey in a fold halfway up. Some products take you nearer to it. Under the basket on those mornings there are cereal fields, patches of vine, farm tracks and the occasional masia with its stone barn, plus Igualada in the middle, a leather-tanning town since the Middle Ages. Head further north and the ground changes character. The Pre-Pyrenees put ridges and river gorges below you, and the Pyrenean flights add real mountains and the cold that comes with them. The sixteen flights on this page leave from seven areas, spread across half of Catalonia, and what you see from the basket depends entirely on which one your operator uses. Two are within an hour of the city; the Cerdanya is a two-hour drive into the Pyrenees. None of them is Barcelona: the city lies under El Prat's controlled airspace, and a balloon cannot hold a heading well enough to be given a corridor through it.

The Igualada airfield also hosts the European Balloon Festival, held there since 1997 and the biggest event of its kind in Europe. It runs Thursday to Sunday in the first half of July, with more than fifty balloons and their crews and upwards of 25,000 visitors, and the mass ascents are the point of it. Catalonia flies most of the year, with the calmest air in spring and autumn, and the seasonal notes are worth checking if your dates are fixed. In July and August the launch is very early because the basins heat fast. The standard Anoia flight lasts 60 to 90 minutes and ends with cava and a flight certificate. Coming from Barcelona means leaving in the dark, so arrange the drive or a transfer in advance, and expect the odd scrubbed morning: wind and cloud base decide it, not your booking.

Some numbers, because the festival is the one date here worth planning around. It has run every year since 1997, which makes it the oldest and largest balloon festival in Europe.
