Hot Air Balloon
Aerial view of Segovia, Spain, with the medieval old town and the Roman aqueduct

Hot Air Balloon Rides in Segovia

A dozen ways to book the same sunrise ride over Segovia: meet in the city, at Plaza de Espana in Madrid, or at your Madrid hotel and travel out by road. From 130 EUR.

The old town of Segovia is shaped like a ship. The Alcazar stands at the prow, on the rock where the Eresma and the Clamores meet, and the Roman aqueduct crosses the low ground at the other end, a double tier of granite arches set without mortar. Between the two the cathedral lifts out of a field of brown tile roofs. On foot you assemble that plan slowly, street by street. From a balloon it arrives in one piece, with the Sierra de Guadarrama standing behind it and the Castilian plain opening to the north.

When to fly over Segovia

Segovia sits just under 1,000 metres on the Castilian plateau, and altitude is what shapes the year. Mornings are cold and clear far later into spring than the latitude suggests, and the summer heat that closes the Spanish plains at midday has usually not arrived by the time the balloon lands.

The flights cross the countryside north of the city, with the Alcázar and the aqueduct as the horizon rather than the ground below — which is why the clear air of April and October matters more here than the temperature.

Where you meet: Segovia or Madrid

The listings here differ in where you meet, not in where you fly. Most start in Segovia itself at around 205 EUR, one of them adding breakfast after landing. Two cost around 245 EUR and begin in Madrid, roughly 90 km to the south-east: one meets at Plaza de Espana, the other collects you from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, so there is no central meeting point to reach in the dark. Several more sell that transfer as a paid extra on top of the Segovia price. Some listings describe those Madrid departures as a flight over Madrid. They are not. Nobody flies a balloon over central Madrid. The transfer carries you out of the capital before dawn and the balloon goes up over Segovia, on the same route as everyone who drove themselves. If you are in Madrid without a car it is the sensible choice, because no scheduled train or bus gets you to a launch field at first light. Our guide to what a balloon ride costs explains what usually sits inside a Spanish ticket.

What else is down there

The twelve-sided church of Vera Cruz sits alone across the Eresma, obvious from above and easy to walk past on the ground. Beyond it the ground opens into the pine country of the Guadarrama foothills, and on a clear morning the sierra itself closes the southern horizon with snow on it well into spring.

Season, timing and the landing

Balloons fly here through most of the year and lift off shortly after sunrise, with spring and autumn holding the steadiest air. The Guadarrama is close enough to make the wind less predictable than a calm morning suggests, so crews make the call a few hours before take-off and cancel when the numbers do not work; check when the flying season is at its best before you commit to a date. Time aloft is usually 60 to 90 minutes. The crew pours cava at the landing site and hands out a printed flight certificate, which is how Spanish ballooning ends. Segovia sits above 1,000 metres and a September dawn there is genuinely cold, so read what to wear and bring and pack a layer more than the forecast implies.

Questions about ballooning in Segovia

Why does one Segovia flight cost 130 EUR when most cost 205?

Because it leaves you to get yourself there. The 130 EUR seat meets on the Perogordo edge of the city, in front of the general hospital, with no transfer and no meal afterwards; the crew takes photographs through the morning and hands them over instead. The operator has flown here for more than 25 years. It is the cheapest balloon seat anywhere in Spain on this site.

Most of the listings cost the same 205 EUR. What separates them?

What happens on the ground. The hour in the air is the same one: what changes is a Spanish picnic on one, brunch and cava on another, a breakfast on a third, an HD video file on a fourth, and the option of a Madrid transfer on several. One is sold as «Segovia or Toledo», with a separate meeting point for each. At this price you are choosing the extras, not the flight.

Is there a minimum age for children on the Segovia flights?

It depends which one you book, and that is the honest answer rather than an evasive one. One listing states a minimum of four years, two state five, and the rest state nothing at all. No national rule sets it: the threshold belongs to the operator and sits on the individual listing, so read the one you are paying for. Every listing requires an adult with the child.

How likely is it that my Segovia flight does not go?

Weather is the usual reason and the Guadarrama makes that call a late one. There is a second reason worth knowing here: several Segovia listings state in their own terms that a confirmed booking can still be dropped if too few passengers sign up for that morning. Free cancellation windows on these listings run from 24 to 48 hours, so check yours before you plan the rest of the day.
