Manufacturers experimented with aluminum and fiberglass gondolas during the twentieth century, and a few examples survive in museums. Fiberglass cracked, and a cracked shell means replacing entire panels in a workshop. Wicker deforms and returns, and when a strand finally does break, a repairer re-weaves that one patch by hand for the price of some cane.
Wicker also does not corrode and does not hide the fatigue cracks metal is prone to; an inspector can read a basket's whole history from the outside. And there is one quieter advantage: the weave breathes. Propane is heavier than air, so if a fitting ever seeps, an open weave lets the gas drain away instead of pooling around your feet.
Cane over steel: the modern basket
A modern basket is a composite in the honest sense. Steel cables run from beneath the floor up to the burner frame and onward to the envelope, so the structural load path is metal from top to bottom.
