Hot Air Balloon Rides in Spain

Toledo is the one to choose if you only fly once. The old town sits inside a loop of the Tagus and reads like a scale model from the basket, with the Alcazar and the cathedral spire as the two fixed points. Segovia gives you the Roman aqueduct, the cathedral and the Alcazar on its rock, and it is sold twice: once meeting in the city, once meeting in Madrid with a transfer. Either way the balloon flies over Segovia. Salamanca turns honey-coloured at sunrise because the whole old town is cut from one sandstone quarry. Barcelona is the honest outlier: take-off is at the Igualada-Odena airfield 60 km inland, with Montserrat on the eastern horizon and none of the city in sight. Ibiza flies the rural middle of the island, red terraces and dry-stone walls, with Dalt Vila on the skyline and Formentera lying beyond the salt pans. Brihuega, in Guadalajara, is the sixth and the most seasonal: lavender fields in July, ordinary farmland the rest of the year.

Take-off is around sunrise, when the air is at its most stable. You reach the meeting point in the dark, watch the envelope inflate on its side and lift, and stay up for 60 to 90 minutes. The landing happens in whatever field the wind provides and the retrieve crew arrives by road a few minutes later. Then comes the part Spain does properly: a bottle of cava opened in the stubble and a certificate with your name on it, handed over with some ceremony. It sits inside a long ballooning tradition and no Spanish crew treats it as a gimmick. The mainland season runs roughly March to November, with spring and autumn giving the calmest mornings and summer launches pushed earlier to beat the heat; the seasonal guide has the detail. Cancellations are part of the arrangement. Crews decide a few hours ahead on wind and cloud base, and the operators who call things off most readily are usually the ones worth booking. If your trip is short, take the first morning available so there is room to try again later in the week.
