Cappadocia: Hot Air Balloon Tour Sunrise Flight

Priced at the entry end of the Cappadocia balloon range, this is the plain sunrise flight over the fairy chimneys, without extras bolted on top. Check-in runs before first light. The burners fire while the envelope fills on the launch field, and the basket lifts as the sky behind the ridges starts to lighten. The track follows the valleys rather than the towns. Love Valley and Rose Valley pass underneath, rock columns and folded stone catching a low sun at an angle the walking trails never give you. Pilots steer by finding different wind directions at different altitudes, sinking toward the valley floor at some points and climbing for the wide view at others. Check-in and the flight are handled by the operator's own crew. Cappadocia is the most flown balloon destination in the world, and Turkish civil aviation caps the region at roughly 150 launches a day across its sectors. Flights go at dawn only. Operators get airborne on something like 250 to 300 mornings a year, which makes weather cancellations a normal part of the season rather than an exception, and they cluster between December and April. Booking an early morning of your stay leaves room to try again if the first attempt is grounded.

  1. Seeing Cappadocia Over The Sky

Cappadocia seen from the air at dawn.

  2. Love Valley

Love Valley passes underneath in the first minutes after sunrise, when the light is still low and the rock columns throw long shadows down the valley floor. The pillars here are weathered out of soft volcanic tuff, tall and narrow. A balloon drifts with the wind rather than steering across it, so how close you pass over them depends on the morning.

  3. Rose Valley

Rose Valley takes its name from the tone the stone turns when early sun reaches it. From the basket the valley reads as a run of soft ridges and eroded folds rather than sharp peaks, and the rock shapes below are finer and lower than the pillars further back.
