This booking covers the whole morning rather than only the hour in the air. Pick-up and drop-off, a flight certificate, health insurance, a light breakfast of snacks and a non-alcoholic sparkling toast after landing are all part of what is included, so nothing has to be arranged separately once you are on the launch field. Collection from your home or hotel happens at least an hour before take-off. The flight itself lasts an hour and stays close to the Fairy Chimneys and the country around Goreme, with Love Valley among the ground the balloon crosses. The basket is a large one, carrying 20 to 28 people, so this is a shared flight rather than a private charter. Minimum age is 5, and children under 5 cannot fly. The champagne party after landing is non-alcoholic, and certificates are handed out there before the vehicle takes you back to the hotel. Plan around the weather rather than the calendar: flights here go at dawn only, Turkish civil aviation holds the region to roughly 150 launches a day across its sectors, and operators get airborne on something like 250 to 300 mornings a year, with cancellations bunching between December and April.

  1. Goreme

    Hotel pick-up before first light.

  2. Love Valley

    Balloon inflation on the field.

  3. Fairy Chimneys

Sunrise is when the balloon leaves the ground, and Love Valley is the ground it crosses. What lies underneath is dry volcanic rock worn into columns and ridges, pale by day and briefly warm-toned while the sun is still low. At that angle every ridge has its own shadow, which is why the early part of the flight is the part people photograph. The basket travels at the speed of the air around it, so the valley slides past underneath rather than rushing by. Other balloons go up at the same time across the region, because the launch window after first light is short and every operator works inside it. Couples book the sunrise slot more than any other, which is the operator's own framing of the flight. If heights make you uneasy, it is worth knowing that a balloon basket does not sway or vibrate the way most people expect it to, and the climb is gradual rather than sudden.

  4. Goreme

After the flight there is a champagne party, non-alcoholic, and then the transfer back to your hotel.
