Hot Air Balloon Flight over Florence at Daybreak
From the basket, Florence flattens into something closer to a map. Brunelleschi's dome holds the centre, the Arno cuts across it, and Ponte Vecchio sits on the water with its shops still shuttered. Piazzale Michelangelo, the terrace half the city climbs for the postcard view, passes below as one small balcony among the cypresses. Past the last rooftops, the Chianti hills take over. Departures are at dawn, and only at dawn. Flights that cross the historic centre of Florence are a restricted product, so dates are limited. The meeting place is confirmed by 4.00 pm the day before, by WhatsApp or email, because the launch site depends on the weather. The route passes the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Ponte Vecchio and Piazzale Michelangelo, then the hills around San Casciano in Val di Pesa where Chianti wine country begins. How far the balloon travels depends on the wind, which also decides the take-off field: it is picked during the afternoon before the flight and sent out after 18:00, so expect the meeting point to be confirmed late. A glass of Champagne is opened once the basket is back down. Hotel pick-up can be arranged on request and is not included in the price, and it can still be added the day before if plans are not settled. Almost everything that passes underneath is working land: vineyards in ruled rows, olive groves on the drier slopes, and ploughed fields in between. The larger wine estates read from the air as clusters of cellar buildings among the rows. What the ground looks like depends on when the balloon goes up. Bare vine rows early in the season give way to full green by summer, then to leaf colour around harvest, so two flights over the same stretch of Chianti in the same year look different from each other. Departure is from San Casciano in Val di Pesa. The exact meeting point is sent by 4.00 pm on the day before, by WhatsApp or email, and it can move if the weather changes. Wind sets the direction and the distance, which is why no route map is published in advance.

Take-off is from Piazza Giuseppe Poggi, beside the river, roughly 100 metres from the car parks inside the square. Wind currents decide the route. The balloon follows them across the city, and the architecture that earned Florence its name as the cradle of the Renaissance is laid out underneath, monument by monument. Part of Chianti and the country around the city pass by as well. Landing happens somewhere else around the city, wherever the wind allows, and the ground staff meet the balloon there and drive everyone back to the take-off field.
