Private Hot Air Balloon Flight over Chianti Vineyards
Most Chianti days are spent in a cellar or a tasting room. This one starts above them. Take-off is from San Casciano in Val di Pesa, about 30 minutes from Florence, and the basket is booked for your group alone, with no strangers alongside you at the rail. From the air the pattern of the wine country is easy to read: vine rows in strict parallel lines, olive groves in looser grids, dark blocks of woodland between them, and villas and castles set along the ridges. The hills carry on to the horizon in every direction. Height and heading depend on the wind, so the pilot flies the line the morning gives. The pilot and the ground team meet you at Bargino and run the safety briefing before take-off. Landing is followed by a glass of prosecco. Final confirmation, including the take-off point, is emailed by 6.00 PM the day before, because wind decides where the balloon can leave from.

Bargino
The meeting point is in Bargino, 20 minutes from Florence and close to San Casciano in Val di Pesa, in the middle of the Chianti countryside. The pilot and the ground team meet you on arrival and run through the safety briefing before take-off.
Tuscany
The balloon drifts over vineyards, olive groves and woodland, with hills running back to the horizon on every side. A balloon has no engine, so apart from the burner overhead the flight is quiet. The pilot handles the flying and points out what is passing below while you stay put and watch. Height and direction depend on the wind, so no two flights follow the same line. It ends with a toast of prosecco.

Free cancellationChianti Valley Hot Air Balloon Ride, 1 Hour Flight
5.0 (105) 5.0 stars out of 5, 105 reviewsFrom around 2,000 feet, about 609 metres, the view runs for miles across the Chianti Valley. Single properties become legible at that distance: the farmhouse, the track leading up to it, the blocks of vine and olive grove that belong with it. The flight lasts an hour and takes off from the village of San Casciano in Val di Pesa. The hills roll rather than rise, and the villages sit on top of them. Castles hold the higher ground. Vineyards and olive groves cover most of what is left. How far the balloon travels depends on the wind, which also decides the take-off field: it is picked during the afternoon before the flight and sent out after 18:00, so expect the meeting point to be confirmed late. A glass of Champagne is opened once the basket is back down. Hotel pick-up can be arranged on request and is not included in the price, and it can still be added the day before if plans are not settled. Cancellation is free when made 24 hours or more before the scheduled departure.

Free cancellationHot Air Balloon Flight over Chianti and Val di Pesa
5.0 (8) 5.0 stars out of 5, 8 reviewsThe launch field sits below Cantina Antinori, and the route follows the Val di Pesa from there. Almost everything that passes underneath is working land: vineyards in ruled rows, olive groves on the drier slopes, and ploughed fields in between. The larger wine estates read from the air as clusters of cellar buildings among the rows. What the ground looks like depends on when the balloon goes up. Bare vine rows early in the season give way to full green by summer, then to leaf colour around harvest, so two flights over the same stretch of Chianti in the same year look different from each other. Departure is from San Casciano in Val di Pesa. The exact meeting point is sent by 4.00 pm on the day before, by WhatsApp or email, and it can move if the weather changes. Wind sets the direction and the distance, which is why no route map is published in advance.

Free cancellationHot Air Balloon Flight over Florence at Daybreak
5.0 (50) 5.0 stars out of 5, 50 reviewsFrom the basket, Florence flattens into something closer to a map. Brunelleschi's dome holds the centre, the Arno cuts across it, and Ponte Vecchio sits on the water with its shops still shuttered. Piazzale Michelangelo, the terrace half the city climbs for the postcard view, passes below as one small balcony among the cypresses. Past the last rooftops, the Chianti hills take over. Departures are at dawn, and only at dawn. Flights that cross the historic centre of Florence are a restricted product, so dates are limited. The meeting place is confirmed by 4.00 pm the day before, by WhatsApp or email, because the launch site depends on the weather. The route passes the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Ponte Vecchio and Piazzale Michelangelo, then the hills around San Casciano in Val di Pesa where Chianti wine country begins. Among the balloon flights listed here that cross the city itself rather than the countryside south of it, this one is priced lowest.
