A Grape Escape over the vines

A shared balloon over the Temecula Valley in southern California, going up as the sun comes over the mountains. Underneath: vineyards, citrus groves, lakes, wineries and the estate houses between them. No two flights cover the same ground. The balloon goes where the wind takes it, and the wind is different every morning. Flights run daily, year round, weather permitting. The pilot is an FAA certified commercial pilot. After landing there is a celebration at a local winery with champagne, orange juice and sparkling cider, plus discounts on wine tasting. If you are marking a birthday or an anniversary, the operator adds a banner for it at no charge.

  1. 41150 Via Europa, Temecula

Meet at Bolero at Europa Village. From Rancho California Road turn into the property on Via Europa, then left to park. Go in through the large double doors: check-in is in the VIP room on your right.

  2. Temecula

The Temecula Valley, ranked a Top 10 wine destination by Wine Enthusiast, and the reason the balloons are here at all: the evening sea air that cools the vines is the same air that leaves the dawn still enough to fly. From the basket it reads as small plots and cellar doors rather than the industrial rows of the bigger California regions.

  3. Welcome to Bolero

Bolero, the Spanish village at Europa Village, where the morning starts and ends. Cypress and olive trees, fountains and wrought iron, a restaurant doing tapas and microbrews, and a boutique running olive oil tastings. One of the clearer landmarks on the valley floor from above.

  4. Wilson Creek Winery

Wilson Creek Winery passes underneath: family run, with a tasting room, wine tours and outdoor seating. Reviewed by enough travellers to be one of the names anyone planning a Temecula weekend runs into.

  5. South Coast Winery

South Coast Winery, 63 acres of vines, named Golden State Winery of the Year by the California State Fair five times, which no other winery in the state has managed.

  6. Lake Skinner

Lake Skinner Recreation Area, in the hills at Winchester. Camping, hiking, horse riding, sailing and fishing below, with shade shelters and barbecues for day trips. Boating only: no swimming and no waterskiing on the lake.

  7. Pechanga Casino

Pechanga Resort Casino, among the largest resort casinos in the United States and unmistakable from the air: 1,100 rooms, a two-level spa of 25,000 square feet, a pool complex the size of five football fields, 200,000 square feet of gaming floor, 12 restaurants and an 18-hole golf course, minutes from Interstate 15.

  8. 41150 Via Europa, Temecula
