A few mornings a year, certain towns wake up to several hundred balloons inflating at once. This page lists the festivals that justify a long-haul ticket, what makes each one different, and the practical detail most first-timers miss: the flying happens at dawn, and the rides sell out long before the crowds arrive.

Three ways into the list
The table above holds every festival we track. These three cuts of it answer the three different questions people arrive with.
Festivals where we fly
Close enough to a flight we sell that the dates change what a trip looks like.
The biggest in the world
Ranked by attendance rather than reputation. The order surprises most people.
The ones that stopped
Ended, paused, or never real at all. Kept on the list, with what happened and when we last checked.
Six places where the sky fills up
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, New Mexico
The largest balloon event on earth. For nine days in early October, more than 500 balloons launch from a 78-acre field north of the city in waves the organizers call mass ascensions. Evening sessions add balloon glows, with envelopes lit from inside like paper lanterns. The reason it all works here is a wind pattern called the Albuquerque Box, which lets pilots fly south at low altitude, climb, and drift back north to land near where they started. We explain the trick in how pilots steer.
Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, England
Europe's largest annual balloon meeting, held on the Ashton Court estate every August since 1979, and still free to walk into. Bristol is the home of Cameron Balloons, one of the world's biggest balloon makers, so the fiesta doubles as the industry's family reunion. Mass ascensions go at dawn and early evening; the signature event is the nightglow, when dozens of tethered balloons pulse light in time to music. Arrive by bus or bike if you can. The parking queues are their own tradition.
Cappadocia, Turkey
Not a festival, and that is the point. In central Turkey the balloons go up close to year-round, weather permitting, over a landscape of rock spires and cave churches; on a good morning more than a hundred fly at once. Organized festival events have appeared in recent years, but the near-daily spectacle is the real draw. Watch from a rooftop in Goreme, or book a basket and become part of the view. No date planning needed beyond the season itself.
Festival Internacional del Globo, Leon, Mexico
Latin America's biggest balloon gathering, held in mid-November at the Parque Metropolitano in Leon, Guanajuato. Around 200 balloons launch over the park's lake, with a strong contingent of special shapes. The signature is the Noche Magica, when tethered balloons glow to live music after dark. Attendance runs to hundreds of thousands across four days, so book a hotel early and expect a party as much as an air show.
Festival International de Ballons, Chateau-d'Oex, Switzerland
The alpine one. Every January since 1979, this village in the Swiss Pre-Alps hosts about nine days of flying between snowy peaks, in the cold, dense air that pilots love. It has real history too: Breitling Orbiter 3 launched from here on 1 March 1999 and became the first balloon to fly nonstop around the world, a story we tell in records and adventures. Day passes are modest, the light is extraordinary, and a few operators sell alpine passenger flights.
Saga International Balloon Fiesta, Japan
Asia's largest balloon event, flown from the Kase riverbed outside Saga City in late October and early November. This one is a serious competition first and a show second: teams from around the world chase targets across the flat Saga Plain while some 800,000 spectators line the banks. Evening sessions moor glowing balloons along the river. It is also refreshingly easy on the wallet: entry is free, and the site gets its own temporary train station for the week.
Before you book anything
Two rules cover every event on this list. First, the flying happens at dawn: mass ascensions launch within an hour or so of sunrise, because balloons want calm, cool air, and the evening glows are tethered displays, not flights. Set the alarm for 4:30 and complain quietly. Second, if you want to ride rather than watch, book months ahead; Albuquerque ride operators can sell out close to a year in advance. Our guide to the best time to fly explains why the calendar and the clock matter so much.
Pick the date before the destination
Festival dates get you there, but season and hour decide whether anything actually flies. Here is how to time a balloon trip properly.
Festival questions
Do balloons fly every day at a festival?
No. Wind or rain can cancel any session, and organizers decide on the field at dawn. Plan two or three mornings at a festival to be reasonably sure of catching a mass ascension.
Are these festivals free to attend?
Bristol and Saga are free to enter; Albuquerque, Leon and Chateau-d'Oex sell day passes. At most events, parking rather than entry is the painful cost.
Can you book a balloon ride at the festival itself?
Rarely at the big ones. Licensed ride operators at Albuquerque or Leon sell out far in advance, so book when you book the hotel. Expect prices similar to a normal balloon ride, plus a festival premium.
