Enenvol, the Grand Est successor
Enenvol was the designated successor to the largest balloon gathering in the world, on the same decommissioned airbase in Lorraine. It ran once. Its story is the second half of the one told on the Grand Est page, and the rest of the calendar is here.

needs rechecking
An event of that size is a machine rather than a name, and the machine does not transfer. Hundreds of crews with their own logistics, a runway large enough to put them all on at once, sponsors who committed years ahead, a volunteer body built over two decades: a successor inherits the field and the expectations, and has to rebuild everything else in one attempt.
It did not survive the attempt. The company behind it was wound up at the end of 2025 with losses in seven figures, which is the fact that explains why nothing of that scale is being planned at Chambley again rather than merely postponed.
Something does fly there now. A smaller aviation festival run by the association of aerodrome users has taken the slot: balloons alongside gliders, microlights and parachutists, at a scale that a volunteer association can carry. It is a different event and it does not claim otherwise.
The entry exists because 'the world's biggest balloon festival is back under a new name' circulated widely for a season and was then not corrected. Anyone who reads that today is reading about an event that has been formally liquidated.
The name was chosen to be a fresh start, and that was the strategic mistake. An event of that size runs on recognition — crews plan years ahead, sponsors renew against a name they know, and visitors book flights and campsites around a word they have heard before. Launching a new one in the same field, in the same month, meant asking everybody to find it again, in the single year when there was no margin for anybody not to.
