Ferrara Balloons Festival

For fifteen years this was the largest balloon event in Italy, run in a park beside a Renaissance city with the city and the province behind it. The last edition was in 2019 and there has not been one since. The calendar has what still flies in Italy.

The pandemic took the 2020 edition, as it took nearly every event that year. What distinguishes this one is that it never came back: the year off became a gap, the gap became an absence, and no successor was announced by anyone.

Nothing has replaced it at that scale. The Italian entries still on this calendar are an alpine week in the Dolomites, a winter gathering in Piedmont and a competition on a Tuscan airfield — all of them worth attending and none of them the same kind of event.

The name survives on listings as a September fixture, which is what it used to be. It is a particularly easy entry to leave in place: a September slot in northern Italy is exactly what a reader planning an autumn trip is looking for, so nobody who copies the entry has a reason to doubt it.

We keep the page because the alternative teaches nobody anything. The next person to search the name finds the same stale listings and does the same work, and the only thing that stops that loop is a page that says plainly when the last edition was.

It ran in a large public park on the edge of the walled city, which is what made it work as a city event rather than as an airfield meet: the launch site was within walking distance of a UNESCO-listed centre, and the crowd was made of people who had come for the weekend rather than for the balloons. That is a difficult thing to rebuild once the arrangements behind it have lapsed, and it is part of why nothing has taken its place.
