Icicle Balloon Fest

This one appears on several English-language lists of winter balloon events and has never happened. There is no organiser, no launch site and no edition — not a cancelled one, not a first one that fell through. The calendar keeps it visible for the same reason it keeps the ones that ended.

Leavenworth is a small Washington town rebuilt as a Bavarian village, with a winter programme dense enough that another seasonal festival would not look out of place. That plausibility is probably the whole explanation: an invented entry survives when it is attached to a town where it could believably be true.

There is a real winter balloon event in the same state, a few hours away across the mountains, and it is the likeliest seed. A list that half-remembered it and attached it to the better-known town would produce exactly this: a real format, a real season, a real region, and a name nobody has ever used.

The tell is the absence of the ordinary residue. A festival that ran once leaves a poster, a local newspaper piece, a photograph, an angry post about parking. This leaves listings and nothing else, all of them phrased like each other.

If you find it with dates attached, the dates were invented too. The useful thing to take from the entry is the method rather than the town: a balloon festival with no local trace is usually not a festival.

Leavenworth's real winter calendar is dense and easy to check, which is the quickest way to settle this one: the town publishes what it hosts, and a balloon festival is not on it. The state's actual winter balloon event is on the other side of the Cascades, in a valley with the space and the cold morning air that the format needs, and it is the one to plan a February trip around.
