For years this was the largest annual gathering of balloons in Europe by number of crews, held in a small town in Westphalia that is better known for the brewery it is named after. It now runs every other year, and this is one of the years when it does not. The calendar shows which are which.

The scale is hard to picture from the size of the town. Warstein has a population in the low tens of thousands, and in its year the montgolfiade brings in crews and spectators on an order that no local infrastructure is built for — which is another way of saying the event has always depended on being underwritten, and that a change in that underwriting shows up as a change in rhythm before it shows up as an announcement.
