Umbria lists two balloon flights on this site, at 253 EUR and 510 EUR, and the difference between them is how much of the morning you buy rather than how good the view is. Both leave from the Perugia area and both work the same ground: the Valle Umbra, the long flat basin running south-east from Perugia past Assisi, Spello and Bevagna. The floor of it is old lake bed, which is why it lies so level and why a balloon can cross it low. Assisi sits on the flank of Monte Subasio at the eastern edge, the Basilica of San Francesco on its long arcaded platform, and it stays in sight for most of an hour.

When to fly over Umbria
Umbria's valleys are narrower than Tuscany's and they hold morning mist well into spring — which is the whole point. The flights out of the Valle Umbra climb through it with Assisi on the ridge above, and that particular morning happens most often in April, May and early June.
The same geography works against you in high summer: a narrow valley warms fast, and July and August mornings close earlier here than on the open Tuscan hills.

The valley from the basket
The Valle Umbra is farmed close, so the ground under the basket reads as a grid: olive terraces on the slopes, vine rows on the lower ground, then ploughed strips, stubble and blocks of sunflowers on the floor. Spello is the first town south of Assisi, pale stone stacked up a spur. Bevagna and Montefalco follow, Montefalco high enough on its own hill to look down the length of the basin. Wind decides which of them passes under you, and a pilot chooses an altitude rather than a heading, so no two mornings draw the same line. The other flying ground is Lake Trasimeno, west of Perugia, flat water with three islands and a rim of low hills behind it. Rome and Florence are both about two hours away by road, which makes Umbria a detour rather than a separate trip, and the country here reads nothing like the Tuscan flying ground around Siena.
Season, weather and booking
The Umbrian season runs from spring into autumn and the calm window is the hour after sunrise, so meeting times are early and the morning is far longer than the flight: briefing in the dark, inflation, about an hour in the air, then the drive back to the cars.
