There is another Luxor to Aswan cruise on this site priced at 838.29 EUR. This one is 838.39 EUR. Ten cents apart, five days and four nights each, the same run upriver and much the same stops. The difference shows up in the reviews: 5.0 from 62 people here, against 4.4 from 105 there. Neither listing mentions the other, so here it is. What this listing states plainly is the inclusions: all meals, transfers, guide services and the balloon flight over Luxor, aboard a five-star ship. Sightseeing starts on the west bank with the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Hatshepsut, Carter House and the two giant statues of Memnon. Karnak and Luxor Temple come the next morning, after the balloon. Then Edfu by horse and carriage, Kom Ombo around sunset, Abu Simbel on a 5 am departure, and the temple on Philae island with the High Dam before the final transfer in Aswan. The balloon is one morning out of five. It launches at dawn from the Theban west bank, the only place in Egypt where commercial flights operate, and the temples follow once you are back on the ground. Wind and weather cancel flights often enough to matter, and the ship keeps its schedule whether you fly or not. The compensation is set out here at 20 USD per person. On a trip this long that is a small risk. On a shorter cruise sold on the balloon alone it would not be.

  1. Valley of the Kings

Mohamed, the Egyptology guide, collects you on time. The day starts at the river, with a motorboat over to the west bank of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings first on the list. Next is the temple of Queen Hatshepsut, where the guide fills in her story on the spot. Carter House follows, and with it the story attached to the place: when Howard Carter and the Egyptian man beside him put their eyes to the small hole cut into Tutankhamun's tomb, before it was opened, Carter was asked whether he could see anything. He said he could see many great things. The house is where you learn more about the man who found the young king's treasures. The two giant statues of Memnon close the tour. Then it is back across to the east bank to check in on the Nile cruise. Once you have rested, the markets of Luxor are worth the walk, the local ones and the tourist ones both.

  2. Luxor Temple

The pickup is early, before the light. A motorboat takes you over to the west bank of Luxor and the balloon flies from there. Karnak comes next, the largest temple in the world, and after Karnak, Luxor Temple. The cruise starts sailing once the touring is done, and the river does the work for the rest of the day. Islands, green banks, boats going the other way. It is a long stretch with the camera out. The ship passes through the famous Esna lock, then keeps on towards Edfu.

  3. Edfu Temple

Breakfast first, then a traditional horse and carriage into Edfu for the temple. Back on board the ship carries on south, with life on both banks going past, fields and villages and small boats. There is a local Egyptian drink to be had on the sun deck while you watch it. The Kom Ombo temple stop falls around sunset. From there the ship sails on to Aswan, a city known for Nubian culture.

  4. Abu Simbel Temple

Around 5:00 am the Abu Simbel run leaves. It gets back around 1:00 pm, in time for lunch, and the rest of the afternoon is for resting. In the evening Aswan is yours, and the famous local market is the obvious place to spend it.

  5. Aswan High Dam

Mohamed meets you at the cruise on time. A short drive down to the Nile, then a motorboat across to the great temple on Philae island. After that the road goes to the famous High Dam at Aswan. The final transfer takes you to your Aswan hotel, the train station or the airport, whichever you have asked for.
