A maximum of 154 hot air balloons can take off per day over Cappadocia. The ceiling is set by Turkish civil aviation, not by demand, and it explains what the flight actually looks like from inside the basket. The sky around you fills with other balloons at different heights, drifting on slightly different currents, so half of what you photograph is the fleet itself. Cappadocia is the most flown balloon destination in the world, and on a clear morning the launch fields below Goreme empty in waves. Flights run over the fairy chimneys, the volcanic rock formations and the valleys around Goreme. Take-off is timed to sunrise, so the first minutes pass in low light with the cones and ridges still grey, and the colour arrives once you are already airborne. The ride lasts approximately 50 to 70 minutes. A balloon has no rudder and no steering wheel: the pilot controls height, the wind at each altitude does the rest, and no two flights trace the same line across the valleys. Pick-up is from your hotel in Cappadocia about an hour before sunrise, with the exact time confirmed the day before, and the transfer brings you back afterwards. Landing is usually onto a trailer, followed by the customary champagne toast and a flight certificate. Launches happen at dawn only and depend on wind and visibility, so operators fly around 250 to 300 mornings a year and weather cancellations are routine, clustering between December and April.

  1. Although it changes seasonally

Pick-up times shift with the season, but the transfer car collects you from your hotel in Cappadocia and reaches the launch field roughly an hour before sunrise. The ground crew lays out and inflates the balloon while you wait, which is the best window for photos and video: burners firing into a half-filled envelope, in the dark, before anything leaves the ground. Your exact pick-up time is confirmed the day before.

  2. Goreme National Park

Once the balloon is upright, the ground crew calls you into the basket. The pilot runs a short safety briefing, and within a few minutes the balloon is off the ground. From the air the fairy chimneys, the volcanic valley and the rock formations sit in front of you at once, which no road below can do. The flight takes approximately 50 to 70 minutes. A balloon has no rudder and no steering wheel. The pilot can rotate it on its axis and take it up or down, while direction comes from the wind, which shifts with altitude. The operator describes balloons as the most primitive and the safest aircraft flying. The launch site is chosen on the morning itself according to the wind, and the route is planned from there.

  3. The pilot will have landed safely at the most suitable…

The pilot brings the balloon down at the point planned during the flight, usually straight onto a trailer, though sometimes the ground crew has to step in for a safe landing. Once the envelope is deflated and the safety checks are done, you climb out of the basket. Tradition holds after every safe flight: a champagne celebration, then a flight certificate. Transfer cars are waiting at the landing site. You are dropped back at your hotel, and that closes the morning.
