Hot Air Balloon Flight over Goreme, Main Flight Area
Not every balloon in Cappadocia flies the same piece of sky. Turkish civil aviation carves the region into sectors, with a ceiling of roughly 150 launches a day, and this flight is allocated to the main flight area over Goreme, the sector directly above the valleys and rock cones most visitors come for. That is the difference between this ticket and the cheaper sunrise flight sold by the same company. It is currently listed 15 percent below its standard price. The morning runs on a fixed sequence. Hotel pickup comes about an hour ahead of take-off, a snack pack arrives from the driver during the transfer, then the launch field, where you catch the last of the inflation before boarding. Take-off is at sunrise, about 30 minutes after the first balloons of the day have gone up, so a good part of the traffic is already airborne and hanging ahead of you when your basket leaves the ground. Clearance comes from Turkish Civil Aviation. About an hour aloft follows. The route holds to the valleys, and 100 or more balloons are usually out at the same time. A champagne celebration waits at the landing site, the flight certificate comes with it, and a vehicle returns you to the hotel. Wind and visibility decide the rest: flying happens on something like 250 to 300 mornings out of the year, with the lost ones weighted towards December through April.
