Cappadocia Red Tour: Private Car and Licensed Guide
Worth saying up front: the Red Tour is a daytime tour by road, and no balloon flight is included in it. What it covers is the classic Cappadocia driving circuit, run privately. A licensed guide reaches the hotel at 09.45, the day starts at 10:00, and the car and the guide stay with one party for the rest of it, so the pace answers to the people who booked rather than to a coach timetable and a headcount. The route takes in Uchisar Castle, the largest rock formation in Cappadocia, and Pasabag, where the fairy chimneys carry more than one cap and the pillars stand inside a vineyard. Zelve follows, one of the oldest settlements in the region and thick with rock-cut churches. In Avanos the stop is a working pottery workshop supplied by clay from the Red River. Devrent Valley and Love Valley close the driving, both known for rock shapes rather than buildings, and the Open Air Museum is on the list too. Cappadocia balloons launch at dawn and land well before this tour starts, so the two fit the same morning: fly at first light, then meet the guide at the hotel a few hours later. The Red Tour also holds up on the mornings when wind grounds the balloons, which happens often between December and April. Lunch and museum entrance fees are not part of the price. Cancelling at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time returns the full amount.

Uchisar Castle, the largest rock formation in Cappadocia
Uchisar Castle is the largest rock formation in Cappadocia, and its structure is what draws the stop. Time here is short, set aside mainly for photographs.
Pasabag Vadisi
Next is Pasabag, also called Monks Valley, where the fairy chimneys carry three caps instead of one. The site goes by a second name, Pasha's Vineyard, because the earth pillars stand inside a vineyard.
It is one of the oldest settlements of Cappadocia
Zelve counts among the oldest settlements in Cappadocia. Its name comes from the hard, strong sticks worn around an ox's neck to plough a garden. According to local accounts Zelve is also where Christianity first spread, and fairy chimneys are more concentrated here than anywhere else, so churches and monasteries cut into the rock turn up across the site.
Avanos
Avanos has made terracotta since 3000 BC, with clay taken from the Red River that runs through the town. The stop is a traditional pottery workshop, where the work is done in front of visitors and the whole process can be watched first-hand.
Devrent Valley
A short drive leads to Devrent Valley, where the fairy chimneys are small and sharply pointed and the ground takes on a lunar look. There is time to walk in and get close to the odder rock formations.
Love Valley
Love Valley is the last stop for rock formations, and the pillars here are distinctly phallic in shape, which is what the valley is known for.
