Goreme Fairy Chimneys Hot Air Balloon Ride, Cappadocia
The route runs over the fairy chimneys and the rock cut churches around Goreme. This is the standard Cappadocia balloon flight, the one most visitors end up booking, over the ground people already picture when they think of the region. Take-off is at sunrise, as it is for every balloon here, because the civil aviation rules do not permit anything else. Cappadocia is the most flown balloon destination in the world. Turkish civil aviation caps daily launches at around 150 balloons across all sectors, and Goreme National Park sits under one of the busiest of them, so there is plenty of company in the air at first light. From the basket the chimneys read as a whole field of cones and columns rather than the isolated shapes you notice from the road, and the churches cut into the rock are easier to place against the valleys they belong to. Flights are dawn only, and they are called off whenever the weather says so. Operators in the region get airborne on roughly 250 to 300 mornings a year, and the mornings they lose fall mostly between December and April, so a winter booking needs a spare day behind it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure.
