Balloon flights over Luxor usually last 35 to 45 minutes. This one is sold at 45 to 80 minutes in the air, and the extra time is the reason to book it: a pilot with an hour to work the wind can drift the length of the West Bank instead of going up, turning once and coming back down. Take-off is at first light over Luxor, capital of the Pharaohs, when low sun rakes across the temples and the tombs and the ground still has some of the night in it. The flight goes to 1500 feet. At that height the layout of the old city reads plainly below, the green strip of the Nile on one side and open desert on the other, with the monuments sitting between them. The operator says it is the only company in Luxor flying that high. Pickup and drop-off are included, from a hotel or from anywhere else in Luxor, cruise ships moored on the river included. The whole thing is over well before the heat arrives, which leaves the rest of the day free for the sites you have just seen from above.
