When to fly over the Gold Coast hinterland
Nobody flies over the Gold Coast itself. The balloons launch inland, in the farmland between Canungra and the Scenic Rim, and the whole flight is a view of the mountains with the high-rises as a distant strip on the horizon.
That inland position is what sets the season: autumn and spring are dry and stable, while the subtropical summer brings the storms and the heavy January rain that close mornings. Winter mornings are cold, clear and reliable — and the least crowded of the year.

The green country behind the beaches
The hinterland begins where the high-rises stop. It is a belt of rolling farm country and forested plateau left over from an ancient shield volcano, with Tamborine Mountain and the Numinbah Valley among its landmarks and the McPherson Range closing it off to the south along the New South Wales border. Locally the whole thing gets called the green behind the gold, which is description rather than slogan. From a few hundred metres up the flats read as pasture and cropping ground while the ridges stay dark with rainforest. The coastal towers stand in a thin strip beyond all of it, close enough to place yourself but far enough to look like someone else's holiday. Breakfast, transfers and an early alarm
