Balloons Over Wanaka

There is no balloon festival in Wanaka. There has never been one. The name appears on balloon-festival lists in several languages, sometimes with dates attached, and every one of them is describing an event that does not exist — the calendar keeps it here rather than pretending it was never listed.

It never existed: it circulates through confusion with Warbirds Over Wanaka, which is a historic aircraft airshow.

needs rechecking

The name almost certainly comes from Warbirds Over Wanaka, a large biennial airshow of historic aircraft held at the local airfield. The construction 'something Over Wanaka' is already in circulation, the town is already associated with flying, and a list that needed a southern-hemisphere entry filled the gap.

What makes it durable is that it is plausible. Wanaka is a lake town under mountains where commercial balloons genuinely do fly, so a reader who checks casually finds balloons, finds Wanaka, and concludes that the festival is real. Only looking for the event itself — an organiser, a field, a date, a single photograph of a mass ascent — comes up empty.

Once invented, an entry like this spreads by being copied. Each list takes the previous one as a source, the dates drift to keep them in the future, and after a few cycles the entry has more citations than some real festivals.

What is true is the ordinary version: balloons fly over the Wanaka basin commercially, on suitable mornings, from operators who sell seats. There is nothing to plan a trip around and no week that is better than another.

The general method is worth taking away from this entry, because the same test settles most of them. A real festival leaves traces that are hard to fake: an organiser with a name, a launch site that locals complain about, a local news report, photographs taken by people who were not selling anything. An invented one leaves only listings, all phrased alike, all citing each other, none of them written by anyone who was there.
