Cappadocia BalonFest

Cappadocia is the one place on this list where the balloons are not the event. Flights leave most mornings of the year from the valleys around Göreme, and the festival adds shaped balloons and crews from other countries to a sky that is already busy.

That changes what the dates are for. Everywhere else on this site, a festival is the reason to travel; here it is a reason to pick one week over another, and to book earlier than you otherwise would.

The valleys do the work here. Göreme sits in a bowl of soft volcanic rock that erosion has cut into pinnacles, and the same geography that produced the fairy chimneys produces the flying conditions: cold air pools overnight, the wind at dawn is usually gentle and layered, and pilots can steer by changing altitude between layers that move in different directions. That is why hundreds of balloons can share a small area every morning without it being chaos, and why the operators there fly on more days of the year than almost anywhere else.

The festival adds what the daily flights do not have: shaped balloons, crews from other countries, and evening glows in the middle of the valley floor. It is worth planning around if you want the photographs everyone recognises, and worth avoiding if you want an empty sky — those two things are the same week seen from opposite ends.

Whatever week you pick, the flight itself is booked separately from the festival, and in high season the good operators fill up well in advance. Weather cancellations are frequent enough that a single-night trip is a gamble: two or three mornings in the area is the difference between a probable flight and a possible one.

One warning that applies to Cappadocia more than anywhere else on this site: the number of balloons in the air on a given morning is decided by the civil aviation authority a few hours before dawn, on the basis of wind at several altitudes. A perfectly clear sky can still be a no-fly morning, and no operator can promise otherwise. Book the flight for your first morning in the area, not your last.
