When to fly over the Atherton Tablelands
Tropical Queensland runs on two seasons rather than four, and the good one is the winter. June to October is the dry: clear, mild mornings over the Tablelands behind Cairns, and the most dependable run of flyable days in the year.
January to March is the wet, and it is genuinely wet — this is cyclone season, and flights are cancelled by rain rather than shortened by heat. The contrast with Melbourne is the useful one: two Australian destinations, three hours apart by plane, whose best months do not overlap at all.

Why the balloons are not over Cairns
Cairns sits on a humid coastal strip between the sea and the mountains, which is poor ballooning country: the air is unstable early and there is very little flat, open ground to land on. The Atherton Tablelands, an hour inland and eight hundred metres higher, are the opposite — a plateau of open farmland where the dawn air is cool and still while the coast is already sticky. Every flight sold as a Cairns balloon ride goes up there, and the drive is the reason pickups are in the dark.
The reward is a view that splits in two. On one side the Tablelands are a patchwork of cane, dairy pasture and crater lakes; on the other, the land falls away into rainforest running down towards the Coral Sea. Dawn is also when the wildlife is in the open, and kangaroos and wallabies on the fields below are a routine part of the flight rather than a promise in the listing.
