The Algarve flies small. Because of how the land sits between the Monchique hills and the sea, the operators here use balloons with a maximum of six to ten passengers rather than the twenty-plus baskets common in Cappadocia or Luxor — the flight is closer to a private one than the price suggests.
What you cross is the barrocal, the limestone belt between the mountains and the coast: almond and carob groves, dry stone walls, orange orchards. The Atlantic stays on the horizon. Flying over the beaches is not on offer and would not work — the sea breeze that makes the coast pleasant is the same breeze that keeps balloons on the ground.
