Portugal flies in three places that have almost nothing in common. The Algarve launches inland from Lagos, over the barrocal — the belt of low limestone hills between the mountains and the coast — with the Atlantic as a strip on the horizon rather than a destination. An hour east of Lisbon, the plain around Coruche is flat, empty and reliable, which is why it has hosted a balloon festival every year since 1997. And in the Alentejo, the flights out of Monsaraz cross cork oak country towards the Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in western Europe.
One flight sits outside all of this: a single balloon at Bragança, in the far north-east near the Spanish border, five hundred kilometres from the Algarve. It is on this page rather than on one of its own, because a page about northern Portugal with one flight in it would promise a choice that does not exist.

When to fly in Portugal
The Atlantic keeps Portugal milder at both ends of the year than its latitude suggests, so nothing here truly shuts down. What moves is reliability: March to May and September to October are when the mornings are calm enough to go up most days. July and August fly too, but the Alentejo regularly passes 40 °C by mid-morning and the launch window narrows to the first half-hour of light.

Questions people actually ask
Which region should I pick?
The Algarve if you are already on the coast and want the shortest transfer; Coruche if you are in Lisbon, since it is the closest flying field to the capital; Monsaraz if the landscape is the point — the Alqueva lake from the air is what people photograph. All three fly at sunrise only.
Can you fly over Lisbon or Porto?
No. Both cities sit under controlled airspace, and a balloon cannot hold a heading well enough to be given a corridor. The flights sold as «Lisbon» leave from Coruche, about eighty kilometres north-east.
What is the Coruche balloon festival?
Coruche has hosted an international balloon gathering every year since 1997, in November. It is smaller than the Igualada festival in Spain but it is the reason the town has the operators and the ground crews it has — the infrastructure that makes a flight bookable on an ordinary Tuesday.
Is a private flight worth four times the price?
It buys you the basket, not more air. A shared flight in Portugal carries between six and ten passengers; the private ones here are sold for two. If it is for an occasion the difference is the point, otherwise the flight itself is the same hour over the same ground.
