Teotihuacan Balloon Ride and Full Day Tour by Bike or on Foot
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Mexico CityA full day out of Mexico City, with the balloon at the start of it and the rest spent on the ground in and around the archaeological site. The UNESCO World Heritage site covers the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the mural paintings, and the day goes further than the standard circuit: an obsidian workshop, tastings of pulque and cactus products at local producers, a neighbourhood where Teotihuacan mural painting survives, and a pre-Hispanic observatory inside a cave. The bike version costs no more than the walking one. Either way the archaeological site itself is walked, and the difference is how you cover the ground outside it, by van or on 10 km of cycling. Lunch and hotel transport are included. Pickup starts from 4:00 am, with the exact time confirmed the day before. One limit worth checking before booking: the maximum weight allowed is 110 kg (220 lb) per person.

San Francisco Mazapa
Seen from a balloon, Teotihuacán reads as a plan rather than a set of separate ruins: the pyramids and the monuments line up below in the order their builders intended, which is not something the ground can show you. It is the reason the flight is worth doing once. The day starts around 4:30 am with pickup from your hotel lobby. Bring a spare battery. There is a lot to photograph between the balloons inflating and the archaeological site passing underneath. The flight lasts 30 to 50 minutes depending on the weather, and breakfast follows before the day carries on. One practical limit: the maximum weight allowed is 110 kg (220 lb) per person. Anyone above it should get in touch before booking.
Zona Arqueologica De Teotihuacan
Breakfast done, the day moves to the most visited archaeological site in the Americas, with its monumental spaces, its murals and its colossal buildings. Walking tour.
San Martin de las Piramides
Leaving the archaeological site, the tour carries on around the Teotihuacán Valley, where the pyramids are seen from angles the site itself does not give you. One stop is an old neighbourhood where Teotihuacan mural painting survives. Another is a pre-Hispanic observatory inside a cave, where the talk turns to how the Teotihuacan people read the sky. The last stop before the end is a cooperative of local products, and the meal is served at a local restaurant. Option 1: Teotihuacán Full Day, walking. On foot inside the archaeological site, by van for the rest. Option 2: Teotihuacán Full Day, by bike. On foot inside the archaeological site, and roughly 10 km (6 miles) of cycling outside it.
