The Valley of Mexico sits at 2,300 metres, which is why a place at the latitude of the Sahara has cool mornings all year. What moves the season is not heat but rain: the wet season runs roughly June to September, afternoon storms mostly, but enough dawn cloud to cost mornings.

November to March is the dry half, and the light over the Pyramid of the Sun in January is the reason photographers pick these weeks. Flights are scheduled year round — in summer you simply want a spare morning in hand.

The zone is large and low. Everything in it was built to be walked, and from a few hundred metres up the walking distances collapse into something you take in at once. The Pyramid of the Sun is the mass in the middle of it. The Pyramid of the Moon stands at the head of the Avenue of the Dead, smaller and better placed, with the hill behind it doing half the work. Around and between the two lie platforms, sunken courtyards, walled compounds and a lot of unexcavated rubble, and from above the line between what has been dug and what has not is obvious in a way it never is at eye level. Dawn is when the air is calm enough to fly. It is also when low sun across stepped stone gives the site any relief at all, throwing every terrace edge into shadow. An hour later the whole thing flattens out and the pyramids start to look like landforms.

Two decisions matter here, and the fare is neither of them. The first is where you are collected: a good half of these listings meet in Mexico City and run the transfer out, which makes the morning workable from a hotel in the capital and means somebody else drives in the dark, while the rest meet at the launch field near the site, better if you are already sleeping this side of the valley. The second is what follows the landing — a buffet, a breakfast in one of the natural caves, ninety minutes inside the archaeological zone, a certified guide, or nothing at all. The private baskets cost four to five times a shared seat and fly the same pyramids. Check which one you are booking before you pay, not after. Then the practical part. Landings happen on open ground outside the zone, so shoes matter more than you would think.
