The city under the balloon
Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities in the pre-Columbian Americas. At its peak, around 500 CE, it covered something like 20 square kilometres and held between 125,000 and 200,000 people. What survives of it is laid out flat on the valley floor, which is why the site behaves so differently depending on where you stand. From the ground it is a sequence of monuments and a long hot walk between them. From a basket it is a plan. The Avenue of the Dead runs roughly 2.4 kilometres straight through the middle, with the Pyramid of the Moon closing the north end and the Pyramid of the Sun set off to one side. The Sun is about 66 metres tall on a base a little over 220 metres square. Early light rakes across the terraces and separates them into distinct steps; by the middle of the day that shadow has gone and the thing starts to read as a hill. Balloons go up from open ground nearby and drift across it, which is the only way most visitors will see the whole layout in one piece.
Three listings, two prices
The two shared flights cost 122.55 EUR and both go up at dawn, so the choice between them comes down to logistics. If you are based in the capital, the version with the Mexico City pickup absorbs the drive, roughly 50 kilometres and no fun to arrange yourself at four in the morning. If you are already staying out near the ruins, meeting at the Globopuerto launch field skips the transfer. The third listing is a private flight at 525.09 EUR, also collected in Mexico City, for a basket you do not share. Altitude, and the cold that comes with it
What people underestimate here is altitude. Teotihuacan sits at roughly 2,300 metres above sea level, and a pre-dawn start at that height in winter is properly cold whatever the afternoon forecast for Mexico City promises.
