Hot Air Balloon Rides in Cappadocia

No other place puts this many balloons in the air at once. On a clear morning in Nevşehir province, envelopes inflate in the dark across the launch fields, and by first light there are well over a hundred of them above the valleys around Göreme. The volcanic tuff here erodes into cones, ridges and hollows that read best from a few hundred metres up, and the dawn air over the plateau is unusually calm. That combination is why Cappadocia became the most flown balloon destination on earth.

Three kinds of trip have been split off this page and now have their own: the multi-day packages that begin in Istanbul, the flights over Soganli and Ihlara an hour to the south, and the listings priced above 300 EUR. What is left here is what most people mean by a Cappadocia balloon ride, a dawn flight over the valleys around Göreme, and there are 30 of them between 40 and 280 EUR.

That gap is worth a warning. The obvious assumption is that more money buys a smaller basket, and sometimes it does. But we read the fine print on all of them, and it does not hold: the two smallest baskets anyone actually declares, a maximum of 16 and a maximum of 14 to 18 passengers, sit at 84 and 85 EUR. One listing at 350 EUR states a capacity of 24 to 28. Another, the most expensive in the whole Cappadocia catalogue, admits in its own description that it specifies neither basket size nor flight duration. If crowding in the basket matters to you, the price tag will not tell you about it, and you should ask the operator directly.
