The plain north of the city
Marrakech sits on the Haouz, between the High Atlas to the south and the Jbilet hills to the north. Balloon crews work the northern side, where the ground is open and the settlements are small. The Jbilet are the worn-down remains of an older mountain range, grey and yellow rock rounded off over a very long time, and from the air they read as low ridges rather than peaks. Between them and the city there are dirt tracks, dry watercourses, olive groves where irrigation reaches, and mud-brick hamlets close enough in colour to the ground that you lose them until you are almost overhead. Sound carries a long way from a basket. In country this quiet you tend to hear a village before you are over it, and the burner sets dogs off at a distance. The Atlas is what holds the view together. It carries snow through the winter and fills the whole southern horizon on a clear morning. No pilot flies toward it, because that is not how the aircraft works. A balloon goes where the wind at the chosen altitude takes it, and steering is a question of finding the right layer.
Flying through the year
Morocco flies year round, which is rare. In most balloon countries the season closes for the winter; here the constraint is heat. Through summer the flight leaves at first light and is back on the ground early, because the air over bare rock on a July afternoon is exactly what a pilot wants to avoid. Spring and autumn are the comfortable months. Winter mornings are cold at altitude whatever the forecast promises for lunchtime, and people underdress for them constantly.
