How cold is it really, at dawn in winter?
Cold enough to want a jacket and gloves. Highveld winter mornings drop to around freezing before sunrise, and the balloon launches in that hour. The burner radiates heat downward into the basket, which keeps your head and shoulders warm and does nothing at all for your feet. It is also, for the same reasons, the most reliable flying weather of the year.
What happens at the landing?
The balloon goes down wherever the wind puts it, which in this valley means farmland, and a chase vehicle follows it throughout to collect passengers and pack the envelope. Expect to help fold if you are the sort who wants to — crews here generally welcome it — and to be back at the launch site or your hotel by mid-morning.
Is a balloon flight suitable for children?
