Every balloon sold in the Emirates lifts off from the same kind of place: the desert inland from Dubai, an hour from the coast, around Margham and the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. The city itself does not fly — the airspace over a metropolis with two international airports is not available, and the dunes are what the flight is for anyway.

If the desert breakfast and the exclusivity are what you want, the price buys them honestly; if what you want is the view at sunrise, the cheapest basket on this page reaches the same view.
Practically, the season runs from about October to April: summer dawn temperatures make ballooning unpleasant and often unflyable, and most operators simply stop. Flights are at first light without exception, and the listings that quote five or six hours are counting the hotel pickup in the dark and the drive back through the morning traffic.
A detail worth knowing before booking a winter flight: the desert here is genuinely cold before sunrise, ten degrees or lower on a January morning, and the listings that photograph guests in shirtsleeves were shot after landing. The burner warms the basket; the drive and the wait do not.

Questions about the Dubai desert flights
How high does the balloon actually go?
Typically three to four thousand feet. That is high enough for the dune field to resolve into its parallel ridges and for the city skyline to appear on the horizon, and low enough that oryx and gazelle on the reserve below are recognisable. The pilot varies it through the flight; the numbers in the listings are a maximum, not a cruising altitude.
What happens in a falconry display?
A handler flies trained birds — usually falcons, sometimes an owl — to a lure after the balloon has landed, at the desert camp rather than in the air. It lasts a few minutes and the birds are captive-bred working animals, not wild ones. Several listings include it; none of them fly with the birds.
How far in advance should I book?
The flyable season is short and the peak of it, December to February, coincides with the busiest tourist months in Dubai. Operators run a limited number of envelopes and morning slots fill well ahead in that window. Outside it — October, November, April — a few days' notice is usually enough.
What happens if the flight is cancelled?
Cancellation here is almost always about wind or visibility rather than temperature, and the call is made early on the morning. Most listings on this page carry free cancellation and rebook to the next available slot; if you are on a short stay, book the flight for the first morning rather than the last so there is room to be moved.
