Once you have landed and cleared baggage, a member of the team is waiting at the passenger exit gate you are directed to, holding a card with your name on it. The drive to the Cappadocia region takes about an hour, and your guide is there at the end of it. The tour starts from that point. Devrent Valley

First stop is Uçhisar Castle, taken here as a viewpoint and photo spot, where the guide covers the history of Cappadocia and how its rock formations came about.

Pasabag Vadisi

Pasabag, also called Monks Valley, holds some of the most distinctive fairy chimneys in the region. Volcanic eruption laid the rock down and erosion shaped it over millions of years, and the result reads as something off another planet. Walking trails run through the valley at several difficulty levels, close enough to the chimneys for a proper look and for photographs.

Avanos

Avanos sits beside the Kızılırmak, the Red River, and the town is known for its pottery tradition. Its history as a settlement runs back to the Hittite period, and the workshops are what most visitors come to see.

Love Valley

Love Valley takes its name from the odd shapes of its fairy chimneys and from a local legend attached to them. The cones here stand tall and narrow, and the valley keeps a quiet, faintly strange atmosphere.

Kaymakli Underground City

Kaymaklı Underground City is one of the largest in Turkey, in the Kaymaklı district of Nevşehir. Eight storeys were cut down into the rock, with a history going back to 3000 BC. The Hittites, Romans and Byzantines all used it for shelter, worship and defence.

Rose Valley

Set aside for the end of the day, the walk through the Red and Rose valleys runs among cone-shaped rocks on a scale that dwarfs the path, and the hiking here is among the best in the region. The Cross Church (Haçli Kilise) and the Columned Church (Kolonlu Kilise) both sit inside the valley, along with other sites. Late in the day the setting sun puts a rose colour on the stone.

Cavusin Village

Çavuşin Village, in the Ürgüp district of Nevşehir, is one of the oldest villages in Cappadocia, known for its fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches and rock-cut houses. Its history goes back to the 4th century BC. Christians used the village as a shelter, and many churches and monasteries from that period are still standing. In the Byzantine era it became an important trade centre.

Goreme Panorama

The Göreme Panorama terrace is one of the most visited spots in Cappadocia, and the reason is what you see from it: the Göreme Valley below, with its fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches and houses.

Uchisar Castle

Uçhisar Castle stands on the highest point in the region, in the town of Uçhisar in Nevşehir, with panoramic views over the country around it. Its history goes back to the 4th century BC, and it was a military base of some weight under the Romans and Byzantines before Christians in the area used it as a refuge. (Panorama only.)

Pigeon Valley

Pigeon Valley runs between Uçhisar and Göreme and is one of the better known stops in Cappadocia, with fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches and houses along its length. The name comes from the hundreds of pigeon nests carved into the rock faces. The area has been inhabited since the Byzantine era, and the rock-cut churches and houses date to the 4th century AD. Pigeons have been kept here since the 9th century: the droppings went on the vineyards as fertiliser, and the eggs went into the making of frescoes.
