Vilnius is one of the very few European capitals that lets balloons fly over its centre. Most cities push them out to the countryside for air traffic reasons; here, when the tower allows it, the basket crosses the baroque Old Town — a UNESCO site compact enough to take in whole from one flight. When it does not allow it, the same booking moves to Trakai, twenty-five kilometres west, where a brick castle stands on an island in Lake Galvė and is photographed daily from the footbridge and almost never from above.
That substitution is the thing to understand before booking: on several of these seven flights the destination is decided on the morning, by weather and by the tower, not by you. Two to three hours door to door, about an hour of it in the air.

When to fly over Vilnius and Trakai
Vilnius is one of very few European capitals where a balloon may legally cross the city centre, and the season is short and northern: May to September, with the long Baltic daylight giving both dawn and evening flights in June and July.
Outside those months it is not the cold that stops the flights but the light and the weather systems — a January dawn here arrives after nine and brings the wind with it. The Trakai flights, over the lakes and the island castle, follow the same window.

The Old Town and the island castle from above
The Vilnius Old Town is one of the largest surviving medieval centres in northern Europe and it is dense: a tangle of courtyards, baroque church fronts and red-tiled roofs that from street level you experience one alley at a time. From a basket a few hundred metres up the whole thing sits in one frame, and the pattern becomes obvious — the churches are not scattered, they line the river bend, and the tower on Gediminas hill turns out to be the middle of the arrangement rather than an outlier.
Trakai is the opposite kind of view. The castle is a red-brick keep on an island in Lake Galvė, joined to the shore by a wooden footbridge, and it is one of the most photographed buildings in Lithuania — almost always from that bridge, at eye level. From above you see what the postcards cannot: the castle is one island among many in a lake system that runs for kilometres, and the defensive logic of putting it there stops being an abstraction.
The landing is part of the show
Flying over a city rather than farmland changes the end of the flight. Crews here are practised at putting a basket into small spaces — a park, a car park, a strip of grass between buildings — and the retrieval van follows the balloon through the streets while it is still in the air. Passengers routinely describe the landing and the recovery as the most interesting twenty minutes of the morning, which is not something you hear about a flight over open country.
Practically: allow two to three hours door to door for about an hour in the air, and expect the operator to confirm the launch site late, sometimes the evening before. The evening slot is as common as the dawn one here, thanks to the long northern twilight, so if a 4 a.m. start is the obstacle there is a genuine alternative — which is rare on this site.
Questions about ballooning in Vilnius and Trakai
Is there a weight limit on the Vilnius balloon flights?
One listing here states it plainly: no passenger over 100 kg, and a maximum of eight people in the basket. The others state nothing. There is no Lithuanian rule setting a figure — the limit is the operator's, worked out from the envelope and the number of seats sold, so it sits on the individual listing. If it matters to your booking, check that listing rather than the destination.
Why do three of these flights cost around 1,000 EUR?
Because you are buying the basket, not a seat in it. Shared flights over Vilnius or Trakai run 170 to 180 EUR a head. The 900 to 1,200 EUR listings are private: your party alone with the pilot, champagne, pickup and drop-off at an address of your choosing, and one of them is sold for proposals at sundown. Same balloon, same hour of air, different arithmetic.
Can I make sure I fly over Vilnius rather than Trakai?
Only by choosing the right listing. Several are sold as «Vilnius or Trakai» and the tower and the wind decide on the morning, not you. But one listing names Trakai and its island castle specifically, and another flies the countryside at Nemenčinė instead. If one of the two is the reason for the trip, book the one that says so and treat the substitution as the risk you are avoiding.
