When to fly over the Magaliesberg
The Highveld winter is exactly what ballooning wants and exactly what nobody books a South African holiday for: April to September is dry, cold at dawn, and almost windless, with a run of clear mornings that the summer cannot match.
The summer is the problem, and it is thunderstorms rather than heat. From November to February the Highveld builds towering afternoon cells, and while a balloon is long back on the ground by then, the instability starts earlier in the day than most passengers expect.

The Cradle of Humankind from above
The ground under these flights is a limestone landscape that has produced more early hominin fossils than anywhere else on earth. From the basket the caves themselves are invisible — they are underground, and the famous ones are entered through modest openings in the veld — but the reason they exist is not: dolomite ridges running across the valley, sinkholes and grassed-over depressions marking where the roof of a cavern gave way, and the Magalies river cutting through the middle of it.
The rest of the view is bushveld and farmland, with the Hartbeespoort dam holding the light early and the Magaliesberg ridge — among the oldest mountain ranges in the world, and worn down accordingly — running along the horizon. Pilots here fly the height deliberately: low over the valley floor, where you can pick out animals and the texture of the bush, then up for the ridgeline and the distance.
Altitude, basket size and what safari means here
The Magaliesberg sits around 1,500 metres above sea level, and thin air lifts less. The same envelope that would carry sixteen passengers at the coast carries noticeably fewer here, which is why the baskets are smaller than the European equivalents and why the flights feel less crowded. It is a physical constraint, not a marketing decision.
The word safari on this page means bushveld, a fenced game reserve and a real chance of seeing large animals below you. It does not mean the Serengeti, and the honest operators say so. What it does mean is that the classic flights and the game-reserve flights often cross the same valley from different launch points — so read what the listing says about the ground underneath rather than the word in the title, and remember that no operator anywhere can promise a sighting.
